Buteyko Breathing involves a series of exercises that can be learned by people of all ages to control many chronic breathing disorders, among them asthma, sleep apnea and snoring, anxiety and panic attacks, and similar disorders. The underlying method is based on comprehensive scientific studies conducted in the 1950’s by a Russian physician named Konstantin Buteyko.
Since that time, Buteyko has been adopted as a routine treatment for asthma throughout much of the world and is used in the treatment of those who suffer from conditions associated with disrupted or irregular breathing patterns.
At the core of Buteyko is a series of breathing exercises that focus on nasal breathing, breath control, and relaxation. Buteyko seeks to restore natural patterns of breathing that we somehow have unlearned through years of stressful modern life—and thereby restore health and balance to our natural systems and enhance the quality of our lives.
A longtime practitioner and teacher of Buteyko, Robert Litman became interested in natural breathing because so many members of his own family suffered from poor health. By teaching the easily remembered, easily practiced tenets of the Buteyko, he has helped them to find their way to better health through natural breathing—and thousands of other people as well.
How Does Buteyko Work?
